Thanks! I wish we would take advantage of it at work. I'm sure that there are scientists here in the Brain Institute that would love to have some of my "free cycles"... :(

Ever since the iPhone came out Apple has been trying to get Adobe to write a more streamlined mobile flash player. one that:

    1) won't crash and possibly make the phone reboot
    2) won't drain the battery too much
    3) won't tax the processor so much that it creates a heat problem
    4) is secure enough to keep malicious code from running on your phone.

For whatever reason Adobe has been unable or unwilling to do this. So, Yes Apple has created restrictions, but very necessary ones. Anything less would be bad for the end user and for Apple's reputation.

So you're saying this theoritical guy that doesn't already have a copy of the CS5 program he's talented in using wouldn't make enough money to pay for it but would make enough to support his family ?

Case in point, people who pirate the CS5 Master Suite probably don't ever use half the applications in it and probably don't have the required talent to even use it professionally. People who do either have their work pay for it or can afford themselves as freelancers.

No, I'm saying this completely fake but probable guy isn't doing well enough with his full time job (which is as a graphic artist), so he's doing a little freelance work to get to a point where he can afford his various monthly payments. It's a break even thing, and there's not much left over, if any... theoretically.

You agree with him. You're saying the same thing as he is, that without the talent and knowledge to make sense of the tool, all you're doing is clicking through the tools as the tutorials you've found dictate and not actually "designing" anything using them or even doing art at all.

IE, talentless hacks thinking that because they read through "Teach yourself Photoshop CS5 in 24 hours", they're now a graphics artist.

Sort of, but his comment about how anyone can learn these apps was incorrect. I was saying you need to have some talent to start with, and once you do, use of the apps CAN increase your design skills - once you start to realize the things you can do with the tools at hand.

I think what is being referenced is what used to be called "ping-pong stereo," the very wide and complete separation of channels -- which in the Beatles catalog is heard mainly on the Rubber Soul and Revolver albums, the two best they ever made IMO. I'm not a huge Beatles fan, but mess with these recordings at your peril!

Indeed this is what i'm talking about.

If some people like it in all it's primitivist glory then fair play.

Wal-Mart uses loss-leading priced CD sales to draw people into the store.

I work for Target... while we do not always underprice CD's, in many products, that is the case. If someone goes to buy that one product (that the store takes a loss on) the store hopes that they will pick up other items while they are there.

Target sells a lot of the iTunes pre-paid cards... and TONS of iPod accessories.

It is March on the International Dateline.

Welcome to Photo of the Day. The POTD thread was started by iGary, and first posted in May, 2006 It was converted to a monthly thread in November 2007 by Arn. POTD is one of the most popular picture groups on MacRumors and often exceeds 500 posts and 20,000 views per month.

Photo of the Day is intended to be a showcase for your best pictures. There is no limit to your gear, just your imagination. P&S and film cameras are welcome along with DSLRs. There are no themes like the Fortnightly Challenge and Weekly Contest. No winners (or losers) either.

    Policies

*One Photo per Day - Don't post multiple images in one message.

*Quote with Thumbnails - If you quote an image that has tags, convert them to [timg] tags before replying. This will post your comment with a thumbnail and save space. Failure to [timg] in quotes is still a problem at this time. Help fix that.

*Multi-Quote - To comment on several photos, click the Multi-Quote button. This puts all your comments in one post. The Moderators like that. Observe the [timg] policy here, too (especially).

*SFW (Safe for Work) only - This is a site - wide rule. If you wouldn't show it in a public place, then it's NSFW (not safe for work). Think before you post.

Optional - Describe your photo.Tell what it is and where you took it. If you know the EXIF data of a photo, include it. The following EXIF fields are recommended: Camera; ISO; Focal Length; Shutter/Aperture; Lens.

If you need any help with posting, try one of these tutorials.

Not seeing any battery drain here yet. 2.5 hours since I updated and the iPhone 4 is still advertising 100% battery. Granted I haven't used it much. :P

So its better than the previous version for battery life?

Continuing the ever-present hum of Core 2 Duo MacBook rumors, AppleInsider reports that the much-anticipated upgrade may come this week (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2207).

Some readers will recall that last week was filled with similar but less-certain claims. A page 2 report by MacRumors (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/10/20061031195123.shtml) had pieced a few, apparently coincidental reports together that suggested an update may have been in the works by late last week. Even after that did not pan out, a European reseller claimed (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/11/20061102134456.shtml) that Core 2 Duo Macbooks would be arriving for sale on November 13th. This claim is largely regarded as a spotlight grab, and there is no evidence that the reseller has any inside information.

The newest information published by AppleInsider reveals 3 Apple product numbers. The product numbers are in sequence, which is common for products in the same family, and suggests that the numbers will be used as the replacement numbers for Apple's 3 MacBook models. The new products are reportedly en-route to the U.S. this week.

AppleInsider has previously claimed that development of the models had been finished (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060919000003.shtml) and was set for release before the beginning of the holiday shopping season at the end of November.

I mean, if BestBuy and others are selling and the rep has not taken a hit, I find it hard to believe that Apple is somehow in danger rep-wise with Radioshack.

There are actually places in the country that don't have an Apple store or even a Best Buy in a convenient location. Heck I grew up in a town where the closest Walmart was an hour drive away. Target was an hour and a half (Best Buy was in the same strip mall). But even we had 3 Radio Shacks within 20 minutes

Those areas are likely the 'selected' stores that are carrying the ipad. Which is likely improving Apple's rep because they aren't playing elitist games etc by restricting sales to only those places with the bigger stores.

My point is, the ping-pong effect, when it was used, was deliberate. It does sound strange now, but I remember when these albums came out people listened to them on headphones and thought the effect was cool.

I'm no Beatles historian by any means, but correct me if I'm wrong: weren't the first albums recorded in mono? The stereo versions were later, rather crude simulations of stereo, which is why they never made it to CD.

Yes the first albums were mixed primarily in MONO. Stereo was an afterthought at the time until Hep and really Rubber Soul and Revolver. The old CDs from 1986 have never been ugraded but if you listened to the Yellow Submarine SONGTRACK and now LOVE, you can hear beautiful remixed and remasterd versions that are so very modern. Those old CDs were crap. The Vinyl versions are so much better.

After many beautiful years together, the time has finally come to part ways with my PowerBook. I've put her through some tough times, especially during university and now the power lead is cracked, the screen latch it broken so she doesn't go to sleep, the graphics card is fried so there are weird lines and artifacts on the screen, the palm rest looks like I took an angle grinder to it and its not attached to the case properly, the 3rd party battery is rubbish the button doesn't click properly.

I've been saving up like crazy for a new MBP with planned after sales upgrades etc, and I'm going crazy here!

    Just UPDATE PUUURRRRRLLEEEEAAAASSSSEEE!:(

Someday, I hope, Apple will release another 12" laptop- prefereably an MBP. I don't think I will buy another computer until then- I love my 1.33 12" PB!

I hear ya. I'm using the same machine and want a replacement. That replacement machine doesn't exist (yet).

Apple has access to all those lovely ULV C2Ds for a start. They would make an excellent basis for a sleek new Macbook Nano for example.

Well it sounds like Apple wants to release all of their iOS devices (the iPad, iPod and iPhone) at the same time, a month or two before christmas, and a month or two after their new iOS release.

That way, they can make everything uniform.

A new iOS is shown every summer. Then a few months later, once developers are used to use, and all the bugs are fixed, a round of iOS devices built around the new OS debut, and people buy them up like crazy for the next several weeks to give as Christmas gifts.

That doesn't make sense from a revenue angle for them. By lumping all their releases in a narrower window, they don't get the more consistent spread out over the year press coverage, media buzz, and most importantly, buying. If all iOS devices came out so close together, people would have to prioritize which one to get as they typically won't spend the money on multiple devices in such a short timeframe. By keeping them spread out, someone can justify buying an iPad in the spring, an iPhone in mid to late summer and an iPod at the holidays, etc. And others will opt to get their devices in different combinations and sequences. Having a new iPad released this March didn't hurt Apple's iPad sales last Christmas, nor will it do so this Christmas, so releasing a new one in the fall won't help them. Steve even said that 2011 will be the year of the iPad 2. Not the iPad 2 and 3. There are already supply issues with panels and Apple is paying a premium to secure larger supplies of panels to keep iPad 2 production up. That points to an iPad retina display being a spring 2012 upgrade.

I'll totally check that out - but is it something you can download on iTunes?

It'd be a little weird to use a song in an iTunes commercial that can't be purchased there!

 This whole forum is about Beatles music being on iTunes!
