I don't think those iPhone shots are real, and I'm not all that hopeful that a phone will be released on Monday, but if an Apple phone is released I will be as excited as I have ever been for an Apple release. Just imagine the syncing perfection and coolness factor.

    No kidding.

I will make a bold prediction - within 5 years the "major" upgrade cycle will be at 12 months, with the "mid-cycle" cycle at 6 months. The number of new features found in those major cycles will approximate the number we're seeing in the current mid-cycle updates.

But prices will not go down.

I also won't be surprised if, at that point, Adobe will only offer subscription (month to month) pricing - you won't be able to purchase the software outright (or buy what amounts to a perpetual license, if you want to be pedantic).

I tend to agree. The subscription model is being adopted everywhere, much to my chagrin. In 10 years time the idea of owning software will seem quaint.

I had a pretty annoying RSS on my week 30 white 1.83 MacBook. Typically it would go for 7-8 hours before shutting down, at which point I'd leave it to cool for half an hour or so before restarting the cycle. I am a student and simply cannot do without my laptop for a week to get the heatsink replaced, so I was simply living with it.

Keenly applied the firmware update today and it was running OK, until this. First one on the MacBook. Really hope this is a one-off.

I locked my jaw from the constant jaw-dropping. :D

I was skeptical at first of it being dumbed down but once I saw the demo, it has a lot of things under the hood. Things just get out of the way and lets you focus on editing. It may look like iMovie but this is even better than the current Final Cut Pro and iMovie combined. Just look at how powerful the timeline is.

Oh crap, now I gotta watch the demo video. I'm an amateur editor who is frustrated with the new versions of iMovie, so I was thinking about FCe. I find the timeline in the current iMovie harder to work than some of the older versions. The older versions had other problems, so I don't want to go back. I was really hoping they would come out with a really nice (and cheap) version of FCE for users like myself in the sub $100 price range. This appears to be doubtful now.

Movies purchased from the iTunes Store can't be burned to a DVD or VCD that will play in a DVD player or Video CD.

How is apple service different from Amazon?. Other than a pretty interface (last time i checked, pretty interfaces did not save me money or help pay the bills).. what's different?. Is the pricing different?.. are the restrictions different?.. why shouldn't I buy from amazon.. what happened to "when apple comes out with their service, they will kill amazon"??

    Lame.

So here's my question - if they're eliminating the "suite" package and eliminating upgrade pricing aren't they killing the current FCP editors who use all of the other suite apps? Currently FCP 7 charges $299 for the upgrade. So if they're eliminating the upgrade price and I want to upgrade 3 of my systems I have to pay $299 for FCPX and then an additional $700? for the other apps for each system? I've just gone from an upgrade cost of $900 (3 systems) to $3,000!

Please tell me it ain't so!

In my opinion the quote was very vague I think it left open the possibility that the price is $299 for the whole suite, maybe it's just wishful thinking.

Here's the quote - "We've had upgrade pricing, we've had Final Cut Express, we've had Final Cut Studio - so we decided that we wanted to really do away with all of that, we wanted to greatly simplify the pricing structure, make it very very easy for you decide if you want to get a copy of Final Cut Pro. So we've decided to make it available for the amazing price of $299."

I think the mention of all those would imply that all of those are now the $299 price? Thoughts?

While I certainly feel this bad scenario is possible i highly doubt it. Apple has been adding to the value of FCP pretty consistently. Final Cut Pro 2 cost $999 back in the day, skip ahead to today and FCP along with Motion, Color, Soundtrack pro, DVD studio pro... costs $999. While their hardware seems to not really drop in price, Apple seems to be on a trend of dropping software prices, while often increasing what the software can do.

That being said I hope they continue to add to FCP (making it more of a complete package like Smoke) and still keep the Suite of products (it can be nice to have a dedicated working environment sometimes). I'd love to see an updated, 64bit, GrandCentralDispatch etc version of Motion, same for Soundtrack.

Plus I haven't heard anyone mention (not that I've looked that hard) how nice it is that Apple gave us a sneak peek, pre release. That is typically not a favor Apple lends to it's public or users.

So users on the subscription model get updated to the next version as part of their subscription? So if I purchase a subscription for a year of 5.5. and CS6 comes out in june, then for no extra cost I'm able to upgrade to CS6?

Unless I've missed something, which is entirely possible, the subscription model seems to be based around temporary folks or how often the packs will be upgraded.

I mean I have 3 macs with design premium CS4. Upgrading the 5.5 would cost $1,947 out right. But if I subscribe for $95/month * 3 macs, then that's $3,420 after one year.

However if I go the non-subscription route, and CS6 comes out in less than a year from the time I would have subscribed, it's the same $649/upgrade cost, and I purchase it....then subscribing would have been cheaper by about $470. But that seems like a lot of assumptions.

I think if you asked most of the population, the vast majority would find it 100% reasonable and appropriate that any retail company, in any business sector, decides what they will or won't sell in their store - be it WalMart, The Gap, Starbucks, or your local corner grocery store. Apples retail store is just that... a retail store --- and the norms of business retail don't go away, to be replaced by a magical la-la land where people get to do whatever they want.

In your case though, companies have alternatives to get their product out. The App store is virtually a monopoly. So, a company could spend months developing an app and have it rejected for any reason. Then, they would have no alternative to make the development cost back.

We were affected by the Three20 project rejections also. It cause a delay for us which in turn caused a delay to a client. They weren't too happy about it. That said, we tell all clients that we do not control Apple's process and the risk of delays is there.

It is frustrating and hopefully they make a change soon to alleviate some of these problems.

You would think cooler. They've stepped up their inspections because of the issues with the first generation MacBooks.

hopefully we do get some really good "top-secret" stuff. Time Machine sounds like the utility in windose xp called systen restore and Spaces sounds like Exposé.
Time Machine is nothing like System Restore. Time Machine allows you to find multiple previous versions of a file. For example, if you accidentally save a revised file without changing the name with "Save As", you can still go back to the previous version of the file if you decide you don't like the revisions or if a file is lost or damaged (I remember one occasion when a child in my home deleted all the contents of an important document and then saved it, and another occasion when a document was corrupted by a drive error; Time Machine would have saved me hours of work on both occasions). System Recover is used to revert to a previous version of an OS when an OS update causes problems (although that would also be a useful utility to have, but its significance pales in comparison to Time Machine).

Spaces is like Exposé on steroids.

I agree with those who believe that, as Jobs said, Apple still has something up its sleeve, more consumer-oriented, likely to be announced at MWSF.

Now if Apple can only beat MS out of the gate on the release date...

They could do ads like this:

    (Cue I'm a Mac/I'm a PC music.)
    Mac: Hello, I'm a Mac.
    PC: And I'm a PC.
Mac: You know, I'm really excited, I have this new operating system called Leopard...
PC: Oh yes, I 'm going to have a new operating system too, called Vista...sometime soon...I think...well, at least there's an 80% chance I will...
Mac: That's great! So, what are some of the new things you'll be able to do...when it comes out, that is...
PC: Well, just about everything Apple said it would give you when it previewed your new OS five months ago, except for that cool Time Warp feature, and I guess that Spotlight search feature is kind of cool too, and all those great new Mail features...
Mac: That's nothing! Have you seen my (insert mind-blowing new feature here)!
PC: Well, just you wait! I'll have all of those features, too, when my next OS after Vista is introduced...in another five years...I hope.

Then how do you turn it off? If it's a feature I should have the option to change it back to how it was. It's pretty annoying and I'm surprised no one else is complaining about it. I understand how some people might like it, but you would think there would be the option to decide which one you want. Similar to changing the rotation lock on the iPad to mute, some liked it and some didn't

This is almost the exact post I wrote yesterday on the last 4.3 update thread. It is driving ne nuts. And I'm sure I was able to distinguish between texts and emails before. I'm filing it under bug too.

    That would be totally irrelevant.

Except for Apple, they all build the same old PCs. Because they all build the same product, sales can move from one company to another company very, very quickly, as we can see from the enormous growth followed by a very quick fall of Acer. Apple has 9.3%, so the rest has 90.7%. It would be possible with these numbers to have nine companies selling more than Apple. If Apple doubles their share to 18.6%, you still could have four companies selling more than Apple.

Right. My point is that Apple's market share is increasing to to increased sales in PC's rather than other companies' failures. As their percentage increases, the number of companies that could possibly simultaneously have greater market share decreases.

Apple's position in this chart doesn't matter one bit; not even the market share really matters; the thing that matters is how many Macs are sold. If HP takes a few sales away from Toshiba, Apple comes third. But if Acer takes a few sales away from HP instead, Apple comes fifth. What does it matter? (BTW. The IDC report at macobserver shows Apple fourth, with Acer having lost a lot more and coming fifth, not third).

As Apple's sales increase and the sum of the competitions' decrease, Apple's market share has to increase. They can take away from each other but if they are all losing sales then Apple has to go up.

If Apple is selling tons of products, in a market with plenty of competitors, how can they be not competitive? 9.3% of buyers in the USA decided that for their money, a Mac is the best computer they can find.

I see Apple slowly rising to a respectable 15% market share over the next few years. Again, the top market share will likely be below 30% so 15% is very good. 9% is very good. HP may increase market share for a while with decrease overall sales of other windows PC sellers but that won't last. If they break 30% it will be temporary.

Can we talk about the disparity between the dificulty levels? I played the game through the first time on heroic and I am not trying to pat myself on the back or anything but it wasn't that hard. I played the first level on legendary last night and I'm pretty sure I died at least a billion times. Whats the deal? I don't remember Halo 3 being like that.

Think you're imagining it. Have updated my MB and i still can't hear the fan in normal usage. I expect it will kick in at some time when it decides things are getting a bit hot.

The way I was able to make my fans kick in was to run the rss tester from http://www.macbookrandomshutdown.com/
Download and run the tester and it maxes out CPU cycles, before my mac would just shut off within 1-2 sec. Now the fans come on.
